In Days of Sand, the Dust Bowl – which previously inspired John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath – becomes almost palpable. It’s an urgent story that resonates with the current discourse about ecological and humanitarian disasters, and offers an answer to an important question: what role can artists play in addressing environmental crises?ĭe Jongh makes use of authentic photos and eyewitness accounts, but more than anything it’s the pages filled with sand and dust that viscerally convey just how lethal nature can be. Misschien had je het al gezien, maar men is flink aan het graven voor de Extra aflevering van BlunderTV over graphic novel Dagen van Zand van Aime de Jongh. They follow Pip all the way into a spooky mansion. They decide to visit him at the hospital and take a shortcut through the woods but they see a ghost-like vision of Pip running away from them and are convinced this whole thing is a hoax. But when they go to meet him at his house, they see him being loaded into an ambulance, the poor lad has appendicitis. The small group plan to meet their friend Joe (known as Pip). The film opens with the narrator describing a small towns Halloween preparation and we meet our main characters, Jenny, Ralph, Wally and Tom. Ray Bradbury voices the narrator and the film even boasts voice talents of Leonard Nimoy as Mr. It is based on the 1972 book of the same name by Ray Bradbury and while there are some changes, mostly the animated film stays true to the book. The Halloween Tree was released in 1993 on ABC before being released on VHS and making its way across the pond to the UK where I found it on the shelf of my local rental store. My absolute favorite of these was The Halloween Tree, and it’s this film that I want to talk to you about today. When I was little, I loved going Trick-or-Treating, but I also loved making my own costumes, reading scary books (Goosebumps were a favorite) and watching spooky films. These days I love decorating, getting dressed up and giving out sweets to the small monsters that come to my door. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I was more interested in young women finding pleasure and having fun and that kind of pursuit. But for me, that really wasn’t the point of my novel. And I think that, of course, there’s always going to be space for that. Marlowe Granados: I think it was more just like, people wanted stories about how hard it was to be a woman. Is that right? It’s kind of like the Me Too moment. You know what I’m saying? And you know, correct me if I’m wrong, but I was prepping for this call and reading about how when the book was first on submission, and you weren’t finding any luck, that a lot of people were looking for a different kind of story related to the feminist aspects of the novel. It’s like a book that channels something that the culture is just so ready for at that particular moment, and it seems to have a kind of energy working for it that is outside of it. I think about that when I think about books that really break out. That’s something that comes down to serendipity. Brad Listi: You talk about timing, like market timing. This is why I’ve put together a list of fun hands-on activities that parents or educators can do with their little ones to help them explore and engage with the story in a more interactive and meaningful way. With large, bright, and colourful pages and a sentence or two on each page to keep their little minds engaged, this is the perfect book to add to your child’s collection. President-Elect Lincoln (Sam Waterston) soon gathers his Cabinet: as his Secretary of State, a rival, William Seward (Richard Mulligan), and as his Secretary of the Treasury, another political rival, Salmon P. Lincoln covers the years the 16th President was in office: 1861-1865, beginning with his arrival in Washington City on the eve of war. Such is the case with the miniseries Lincoln (or Gore Vidal's Lincoln, not to be confused with Gore Vidal's Caligula). Still, I suppose that every once in a while, something good could come out of him. I make no secret my utter disdain for Gore Vidal. *Author's note: In recognition of two Abraham Lincoln films, the biopic Lincoln and the horror/comedy Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I've decided to look at two television miniseries about the 16th President. Case in point: the new film adaptation of Deep Water, starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, which comes out on March 18. Though it’s been more than 70 years since her first novel was published, the thrills of Highsmith keep coming-her stories, though dark, tap into universal themes like moral conflict and forming identity, making them both apropos and timeless. Filled with blackmail, intrigue, and obsession, Strangers on a Train was the first of many film adaptations that would be made of Highsmith’s work, which comprises 22 novels and stories. Strangers on a Train, Highsmith’s suspenseful first novel, was published in 1950 and made into a film just a year later by Alfred Hitchcock. Ripley to the aloof yet alluring housewife Carol Aird in The Price of Salt-lends itself well to the big screen. The dramatic nature of Highsmith’s work, embodied by complex, riveting characters- from the charming but murderous grifter Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Lust, repressed desire, jealousy, suspense, class anxiety, rage-and usually at least one murder-are all recurring elements in her work. The novels of Patricia Highsmith, the high priestess of the psychological thriller, delve into the dark depths of the human condition. Ana de Armas in 'Deep Water' Credit - 20th Century Studio While Victor has become the monster, his first monster has become more human. And Victor’s first creation – the monster – is also still alive. She wonders why he collects fine art – all created by humans – if he hates the Old Race so much. But Erika loves to read and begins to question Victor’s motives. He’s even on his fourth wife, Erika, who is the perfect servant. To Victor, they are the perfect humans and he will conquer the world with them. Sexual gratification, achieved by having sex with any member of the New Race because they lack the needs for attraction, only brings them self satisfaction and they are all sterile. He is creating a New Race to live upon us and eventually wipe out the “Old Race.” His new creations have two hearts, no scars, and lack the ability to feel certain emotions such as the urge to kill or harm themselves. He’s rich and living in New Orleans, and he has perfected his ability to create life. Victor Frankenstein, now known as Victor Helios, has survived the last 200 years since Mary Shelley first wrote about him. Sure, it may not hold much literary merit or be an engrossing read that really makes you think, but it still holds a certain amount of entertainment value that I liked. It’s a fast page turner thanks to its short chapters, lots of dialogue, and lack of detail. I finished it in record time for me – just 7 days. This is only the second book from Koontz that I’ve read, and since this one introduces his Frankenstein series, it certainly won’t be the last. |
